A ceramic sculpture of Coyolxauhqui by Adrián Martínez Alarzón of Taller Bichuga Bigu in Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca. Coyolxauhqui — she of the golden bells — is the Mexica moon goddess, dismembered by her brother Huitzilopochtli and cast into the sky, where she became the moon. The famous monumental disc of Coyolxauhqui, discovered beneath the Templo Mayor in Mexico City, is one of the masterpieces of pre-Hispanic art. Adrián brings this ancient subject into his raku practice, where the surface textures and mineral finishes of the firing process give the figure an appropriately cosmic quality — something between excavated and emergent, as if the goddess were still in the process of becoming.
