The ceiba — the kapok tree — was the axis mundi of Mayan cosmology: the tree that connects the underworld, the earth, and the heavens. Fidel Ugarte photographs the ceibas of Veracruz with awareness of that weight, finding in their enormous, buttressed trunks something that goes beyond botany. The wood that once built ships now lives on in the living trees of the coast — as Ugarte writes, the soul rests there. Sepia-toned silver-gelatin on cotton paper. Limited edition. 55 × 45 cm.
