A low, wide vase by Maricela Zambrano of Santo Domingo Tonaltepec, in Oaxaca's Mixteca. Its body swells out from a small base and closes toward a narrow mouth, carrying bold black shapes, hooked spirals and scrolls over the warm tone of the natural clay.
The clay is burnished by hand, the design scratched in with sgraffito and colored with mineral pigments and slips.
