INQUIRE ABOUT THIS PIECE

Conceived and Designed by Rombo (b. 1993)

Interpreted and Fabricated by Enrique Fabian Ortega (b. 1993)

Painted Carved Copal Wood, 2021

An experiment combining New York and Zapotec culture from Oaxaca, Mexico. Part of the New York Titans series, the Met Breuer Museum, formerly the Whitney Museum, is represented as a winged cat with multiple eyes located at every window of the building.

Enrique implemented his own interpretation of the idea using a geometric language of ancient Zapotec origin. Each pattern is symbolic of different Zapotec beliefs, which live on through the making of Alebrijes. This is one way to allow this ancient culture to live on past Mexico's borders, creating a symbiotic relationship with other cultures.
