A polychrome clay jaguar hand-modeled by the women artisans of Amatenango del Valle, Chiapas — a Tzeltal Maya community whose unbroken ceramic tradition stretches back centuries. Unlike the wheel-thrown or mold-cast ceramics common elsewhere, Amatenango pieces are formed entirely by hand and burnished with a smooth river stone before firing in an open-air kiln. The result is a surface of extraordinary warmth and depth. This jaguar — the largest and most imposing in the series — is painted in the vibrant polychrome palette that has become Amatenango's signature, its spots and markings rendered with a precision born of generations of practice.
