A burnished clay vessel handcrafted by Oscar Rodríguez in the community of Juan Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, a place internationally recognized for its distinctive contemporary ceramic tradition rooted in the ancient Casas Grandes tradition. Titled Where Spirits Dwell, the vessel features two carefully painted rabbits that inhabit its rounded surface, creating a quiet composition in which the animal figures appear integrated into the rhythm and movement of the form.
The vessel is burnished to achieve a smooth, refined surface and decorated entirely by hand with mineral pigments, using a delicate brush made from a young girl's hair. This meticulous technique allows for exceptionally fine lines and subtle details, emphasizing the patience and precision involved in its creation. Fired in a traditional kiln, the piece brings together the natural presence of burnished clay with a symbolic representation of the animal world, resulting in a vessel that feels both intimate and contemplative.
