about the artist
Adrián MartÃnez is a ceramic artist from Santa MarÃa Atzompa, Oaxaca, a community renowned for its centuries-old pottery tradition and the iconic green and earth-toned clay that has defined the region’s identity. Trained from a young age in his family’s workshop, Adrián learned the foundational techniques of Atzompa—hand-building, wheel throwing, and open-fire kilns—yet over time he has developed his own artistic language, one that blends heritage, experimentation, and a deep respect for the craft. Although his roots lie in the utilitarian pottery typical of his community, Adrián has expanded the possibilities of the medium through new forms, textures, and surface treatments that bridge tradition and contemporary design. He works with locally sourced clay mixtures and experiments with firing temperatures, atmospheric conditions, and natural glazes he formulates himself. His pieces are defined by organic lines, tactile surfaces, and a subtle balance between functional and sculptural expression. Adrián’s work reflects an honest dialogue with material and process: each piece carries the traces of time, fire, and the hand that shaped it. His practice positions ceramics as a living bridge between Atzompa’s collective memory and the creative potentials of the present, establishing him as an important voice among the new generation of Oaxacan ceramicists.
