An Altar to the Twin Towers
Public art installation for the Day of the Dead
On November 2, 2021, Day of the Dead in Mexico, Studio Rombo placed an altar in the center of Maria Hernandez Park in Bushwick, Brooklyn, dedicated to the twenty years since the fall of the Twin Towers and to all the people we have loved and lost. Diego Salazar conceived it after his travels in Oaxaca, where the dead are honored with altars, flowers, candles and celebration.
At its heart was his dry-pastel drawing "1985: A Beautiful Day in Lower Manhattan", held in a turned-wood frame designed and built in Philadelphia by the designer and wood-turner Janine W. It was a cold, wet night, but friends came, and we hope to keep the tradition going.
