Álvaro Medina
Álvaro Medina is an artist and printmaker from Huajuapan de León, in Oaxaca's Mixteca region, deeply tied to the printmaking tradition that has given the state its visual identity. From an early age he found in the print a space for exploration and memory. Drawn to the symbolic force of Oaxacan printmaking and its roots in community, he began engraving at the workshop of the Huajuapan regional museum, “Juan Alcázar”, where he understood that printmaking was less a technique than a language for telling stories, resistance and silences. His work grows out of that dialogue between cultural heritage and personal search.
He works mainly in linocut and woodcut, treating wood and linoleum as living surfaces: every cut is precise, every grain answers the intention. He uses intense inks and sharp contrasts, combining traditional processes with a contemporary sensibility in compositions that move between the figurative and the symbolic, where texture and depth take the lead.
