A bear in copal wood, carved and hand-painted by Enrique Fabian Ortega in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Where Agustín Cruz Prudencio's bears are grounded and solid, Enrique's is lighter on its feet — the pose more alert, the surface patterning more intricate, the overall effect closer to the dreamed animal of the alebrije tradition than the observed one of natural history. A beautiful example of how the same subject can yield entirely different works in the hands of different Tilcajete carvers.
