A black sun in silver filigree by the Salgado Téllez Sisters of Santa Cruz Xoxocotlán, Oaxaca. The black sun is a symbol that appears in pre-Hispanic cosmology — the sun of the night, the solar force in its hidden, traveling aspect — and the sisters render it in their filigrana technique with a corresponding gravity. Fine silver wire worked entirely by hand, the form open and precise, the darkness implied by the color choice carrying a weight that belies the delicacy of the construction.
