A wool tapestry with natural dyes by Christian Mendoza Ruiz (b. 1999), woven in 2021. The title — in Zapotec, the indigenous language of Oaxaca — translates as the artist himself provided: Praying to God for good health for the people of the world, a piece made in the shadow of the pandemic, its prayer woven into the fabric rather than spoken. Christian works in the tradition of Zapotec tapestry weaving using wool and natural dyes — a technique that connects every thread of the piece to the land and culture it comes from. An intimate and sincere work from a young artist at the beginning of his practice.
