A ceramic sculpture by Demetrio Garcia Aguilar of Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca — the son of Maestra Josefina Aguilar, one of the celebrated Aguilar sisters whose polychrome figures helped define the international image of Oaxacan ceramic art. Demetrio took the red-clay tradition he learned from his mother and transformed it into his own: his figures navigate the territory between life and death, the sacred and the comic, with a personal iconography shaped by a near-death experience in his youth that gave him, he has said, a particular relationship with death — one of equal parts respect and mockery. Atrapado — trapped — carries that weight: a figure caught between states, rendered in Demetrio's richly colored and carefully detailed style.
