A devil in polychrome ceramic by Leopoldo Mendoza Aguilar of Ocotlán de Morelos, Oaxaca. In Mexican folk tradition the devil is rarely purely menacing — he is theatrical, ironic, a character in a larger moral comedy — and Leopoldo's treatment captures that ambivalence: the figure is arresting and vivid, its colors bold, its presence filling the room, but there is something almost playful in its expression. A piece that belongs to a long lineage of Oaxacan folk art that has always known how to laugh at the darkness.
