A dog in copal wood, carved and hand-painted by Enrique Fabian Ortega in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. The dog in Mesoamerican culture is a companion across worlds — the Xoloitzcuintli, the hairless dog of ancient Mexico, was believed to guide the dead through the underworld — and Enrique's carved version carries something of that quiet loyalty. The hand-painted surface in his signature geometric style gives the familiar animal an unexpected dignity. A piece that is both playful and somehow solemn.
