A red clay ceramic vase in the form of a face, hand-formed by Elia Mateo — one of the artisans of Taller Mujeres del Barro Rojo in Tlapasola, Oaxaca. The women of this collective work in the Central Valleys tradition of red clay pottery, shaping each piece by hand and finishing with mineral engobes that deepen the warm, natural tones of the clay. In Elia's hands the vase becomes a face: two functions merged into one form, the vessel and the portrait occupying the same space. A piece that holds water, flowers, or simply a gaze.
