A clay salad bowl decorated with spikes, made by Silvia Martínez Díaz in Santa María Tlahuitoltepec, Oaxaca — a Mixe community in the Sierra Norte whose ceramicists produce hand-formed, pit-fired work from locally sourced clay in a tradition that predates contact with the Spanish. Silvia's pieces are burnished with a smooth river stone to achieve their characteristic satin finish, then fired in an open-air kiln that leaves each piece with unrepeatable marks of smoke and flame. The spikes are more than decoration — they reference the natural forms of the Sierra, the organic geometry of the plants and animals that share the community's high-altitude world. A functional object made with the patience and precision of a tradition that has never needed to hurry.
