A ceramic lamp on feet by José López Aragón of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca — barro negro, the black burnished clay whose deep surface absorbs and reflects light in equal measure. Raised on small legs, the form has an organic, almost animate presence, as if it had arrived on its own. Functional and sculptural at once, it holds light from within while its polished black exterior catches light from without: two kinds of luminosity sharing the same object.
