A nativity scene contained within a mermaid ship — an image entirely characteristic of Agustín Cruz Prudencio's imagination — carved from copal wood and hand-painted in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Agustín's work consistently finds the unexpected within the familiar: the sacred scene arrives here by sea, carried in a vessel that is half woman and half ship, the sacred and the fantastical sharing the same hull. The painted surface is meticulous, the overall effect generous and strange and entirely his own.
