INQUIRE ABOUT THIS PIECE
A bull nahual — the animal spirit companion, a concept rooted in Zapotec and Mesoamerican cosmology — rendered in red clay ceramic by Sara García Mendoza of Taller Manos Que Ven in San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca. At 24 inches tall, this is among the most ambitious pieces in the workshop's tradition of large-scale figurative ceramics. The nahual is power in animal form: protective, ancestral, belonging to a world that exists just alongside the visible one. Sara Ernestina honors that weight while making the piece entirely her own.
