A nativity scene inside a bus, carved from copal wood and hand-painted by Agustín Cruz Prudencio in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. The bus is one of the great recurring images of everyday Mexican life — perpetually overloaded, perpetually in motion, carrying everyone somewhere — and Agustín places the nativity within it with a humor and tenderness that feels absolutely right. The sacred arrives by public transport, which may be the most honest way for it to travel. A piece that makes you smile, then look closer.
