Love-Birds I — a mask from the Oaxaca Series conceived by Diego Salazar and fabricated by Margarita Sumano Santos. The first of the lovebird pair, its imagery drawing on the long tradition of the paired bird in Mexican decorative art — the image of fidelity, of companionship, of two things that belong together rendered as a single object. Worn as a mask, the lovebirds become an expression of the wearer's face: to put on this mask is to choose, for a moment, to be the image of connection.
