A raku-fired ceramic vase by Adrián Martínez Alarzón of Taller Bichuga Bigu in Santa María Atzompa, Oaxaca — a village whose pottery tradition stretches back millennia and whose contemporary ceramicists are among the most innovative in the state. Adrián's work caused controversy in Atzompa when he first introduced it: the raku technique, which uses organic materials in the firing process to produce unpredictable, root-like surface textures, was seen by some as a departure from tradition. He continued anyway, guided by a vision of what the ancient clay of his village could become in new hands. The pink tones of this vase emerge from natural mineral engobes and the chemistry of open firing — colors that cannot be planned, only invited. A piece from an artist with deep roots and genuine independence.
