An octopus in full spread, carved from copal wood by Enrique Fabian Ortega in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Eight arms unfurl in every direction, offering Enrique a sprawling canvas for his hand-painted geometric patterns — each arm carrying its own rhythm of color and form while the whole remains startlingly coherent. The alebrije tradition was built on creatures like this: unlikely subjects rendered extraordinary through the patience and vision of the carver's hand.
