A ceramic pot covered in spikes by José López Aragón of San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca — made in barro negro, the black burnished clay that has defined his village's ceramic tradition for centuries. The spikes are an allusion to the pochote, the spiny ceiba tree revered in Oaxacan indigenous culture as the tree of life, its thorns protecting the boundary between the earthly and the sacred. In barro negro the spikes take on an added gravity: black, sharp, precise, they transform the vessel into something between a container and a guardian. A piece of considerable presence and intention.
