A Roman figure carved from copal wood and hand-painted by Agustín Cruz Prudencio in San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca. Agustín's work roams freely across time and culture — biblical stories, contemporary vehicles, mythical creatures, animals — and this figure belongs to his ongoing meditation on the human body in different historical guises. The Roman arrives in Tilcajete via the syncretic imagination of an artist who has found, in the tradition of painted copal wood sculpture, a form capacious enough to hold almost anything.
