A deer entwined with serpents — one of the most symbolically charged images in Oaxacan folk art — carved from copal wood by Enrique Fabian Ortega in San Martín Tilcajete. The serpents wind around the deer's legs and neck with an ease that suggests the encounter is ancient and inevitable. Enrique's hand-painted surface covers every form in layered geometric pattern, so that the whole sculpture pulses with contained energy. A major piece from one of Tilcajete's most gifted young carvers.
