Mata Ortiz

Traditional Pottery
Chihuahua, México

about the artists

In the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert, in the small town of Mata Ortiz, the earth holds ancient secrets waiting to be touched by patient hands. There, pottery is reborn each day, thanks to artisans who transform clay into a living memory of the ancient Paquimé culture. It all began with Juan Quezada Celado, a man who gazed at fragments of ancient pottery and heard in them the voices of his ancestors. With patience and passion, he discovered how to recreate the lost techniques, and thus a tradition was born that today inspires the entire community. Each piece begins with local clay, shaped by hand using the coiling method, without a potter's wheel or molds, letting intuition guide the form. The clay, at the touch of the artisan's fingers, transforms into vessels, vases, and pitchers that seem to breathe with the history of the desert. Each surface is smoothed and polished with stones, each geometric or symbolic design is drawn with natural pigments and delicate brushes, some so fine they seem to weave memory into the clay. Fire crowns the process: in simple kilns or open-air kilns, wood and firewood embrace the pieces, sealing within them the resilience and beauty of the earth and time. Thus, each Mata Ortiz creation is not just an object, but a living testament to creativity, tradition, and transformation, where the ancient and the contemporary meet. Today, Mata Ortiz pottery shines far beyond its hometown. Its pieces grace galleries and homes around the world, carrying with them the story of a fertile desert, skilled hands, and an art born from clay, fire, and memory. Within Mata Ortiz pottery lies the talent and dedication of great master artisans who have brought international prestige to this tradition. Aide González Betancourt is an artisan from this region, a prominent ceramist from Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, recognized for her dedication to preserving and sharing with the world the pottery tradition inspired by the ancient Paquimé culture. Together with her husband, she crafts each piece entirely by hand, creating geometric designs and meticulously precise finishes that reflect the region's rich cultural heritage. As one of the leading promoters of Mata Ortiz pottery, Aide has brought this art to collectors and galleries both within and outside of Mexico, transforming clay into unique works that combine heritage, identity, and artisanal excellence.

Rombo was born as a space for voices that are rarely heard. It is a meeting point between art, design, and humanity—a bridge that connects creators with the world. We believe in the power of honest work and in the beauty that emerges from hands that create with purpose.

From Mexico, we seek to discover and support artists and artisan families whose talent deserves to be seen, valued, and celebrated. Every piece we share is part of a larger dream: to build a new era of art, where recognition and prosperity reach those who shape our culture.

Rombo is that beginning—an act of faith in art, in community, and in the power of creating together.
