An Offering in Clay
An Encounter Between Mata Ortiz and Oaxaca

The pottery of Juan Mata Ortiz, Chihuahua, stands as a distinguished expression of Mexican folk art. Renowned for the precision of its forms, the delicacy of its structures, and the complexity of its designs, this tradition draws upon the archaeological heritage of Paquimé and transforms it into a contemporary artistic manifestation. Its recognition is closely tied to the master artisan Juan Quezada Celado, who recovered and passed on ceramic techniques that remain vibrant within his community today.

Building upon this tradition, master potters from Mata Ortiz crafted unadorned, "blank" pieces, which were then entrusted to local artists in Oaxaca for their creative intervention. Without any predetermined aesthetic guidelines, each artist found in the clay a space of freedom to express their own vision of the Day of the Dead—drawing inspiration from its symbols, memories, and emotions, as well as their own unique ways of understanding this celebration.

*An Offering in Clay* thus brings together diverse perspectives centered on a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Each work represents a dialogue between the craft of pottery and contemporary creation—between the forms conceived by the hands of the masters from Mata Ortiz and the personal interpretations of the artists from Oaxaca. The result is a meeting of knowledge and sensibilities, in which clay transcends its material nature to become a vehicle for expression, memory, and homage. It is a collective offering that celebrates artistic diversity and the power of art to keep our traditions alive, to reinterpret them, and to imbue them with new meaning.

Rombo was born as a space for voices that are rarely heard. It is a meeting point between art, design, and humanity—a bridge that connects creators with the world. We believe in the power of honest work and in the beauty that emerges from hands that create with purpose.

From Mexico, we seek to discover and support artists and artisan families whose talent deserves to be seen, valued, and celebrated. Every piece we share is part of a larger dream: to build a new era of art, where recognition and prosperity reach those who shape our culture.

Rombo is that beginning—an act of faith in art, in community, and in the power of creating together.
